Highlights of the year 2013: The Awesome, The Tragic and The Un-Classified

Our year is almost over! I still can't believe 2013 breezed in and out like that. It's the second time we get to say

'In your face Mayans, it's December 21!'

The world didn't end and we're still alive. I know we'll all be alive to see The Wolf of Wall Street and of course, see the Merry Christmas text from the friends we haven't spoken to since some major argument in April.

Anyways, this was a REALLY eventful year and this is just my rundown of 2013 a.k.a. The year of Miley.

The Tragic
Deaths
2013 will be remembered as the year some of the most loved stars in Hollywood history earned their angel wings.
June 19
The news of James Gandolfini's death came with a bang
'How could Tony Soprano be gone?!'
His funeral was a tearful reunion for many stars, particularly those who played members of the Soprano family. I recall in particular, moving pictures of Jamie Lynn Sigler in tears.
July 13
Never expecting any of the most seen faces on TV to leave the world all of a sudden, Cory Monteith's death was something people, especially the large Glee family/fanbase, could not take as true. Mark Salling's tweet of 'No' captured exactly how many people, myself included, felt at that point.
August 19
Just as I concluded an episode of Rizzoli and Isles (in all honesty) I went online and all I saw was 'Jett Jackson star found dead'. It couldn't possibly be true. But it was in the end. Lee Thompson Young had died from an apparent suicide. Painful
November 30
And just when we thought the painful celebrity exits were over. Paul Walker earned his angel wings in the most ironic way possible. Fatal car crash. It was felt world-over especially since Fast and Furious 6 was one of the year's biggest movies and the franchise is one of the most watched ever. It was also very sad to see Tyrese so hurt.
December 5
The biggest news came when the South African government announced that Nelson Mandela, one of the world's most revered and unforgettable icons had passed away. It was bittersweet for many South Africans as they were happy for his long and fulfilled life at the same time pained by the loss of their champion.
December 14
I had only come to really know Peter O'Toole this year. I saw him in Phantoms, a movie Ben Affleck is famous for. But honestly, Peter O'Toole is the one who stood out. This blue-eyed legend famous for being Lawrence of Arabia passed away peacefully at the age of 81. This twitter user captured my feeling exactly
In their happiest moments. RIP #Gandolfini #Young #Mandela #Monteith #Walker
In his youthful days. RIP #OToole

Break-ups
2013 had its fair share of celebrity break-ups. The ones we saw coming, the ones we wanted and the ones that really shocked us. I for one was really shocked at Orlando Bloom and Miranda Kerr's break-up and alongside many others, expected the two Kardashian break-ups: That of Bruce and Kris Jenner and that of Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom

L-R- Miranda and Orlando, Miley and Liam, Khloe and Lamar, Kris and Bruce, George and Stacey
It's all quite unfortunate.

The Awesome
Topping this section is definitely the birth of the boy who'll one day be king (so glad I witnessed this in my era).
His Royal Highness, Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge was born July 22, 2013 and is the third in line to the succession of the British throne (he displaced Handsome Harry!). He was also christened this year
on October 23, 2013.
Did you know that a tier from Will and Kate's 2011 wedding cake was served to the guests at the christening?
L-R- His first reveal to the world and christening portrait.

This year also, Tinseltown churned out some of the best movies yet. We saw 12 Years A Slave, Lee Daniel's The Butler, and critical acclaim aside, flicks like Iron Man 3 and The Great Gatsby. You all fell in love with Minions and wished you had a hammer like Mjolnir (that's Thor's hammer, if you didn't know). The year's end also brought us Inside Llewyn Davis (oh gosh, you should see Oscar Isaac sing Roar on Jimmy Fallon) and eventually, we'll see The Wolf of Wall Street on Christmas day (Can anyone explain my excitement?)

This year's Top 10 Box Office grosses (see full list):
1. Iron Man 3   $1,215M
2. Despicable Me 2   $918.4M
3. Fast and Furious 6   $788.7M
4. Monsters University    $743.6M
5. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire  $734.5M
6. Man of Steel    $662.8M
7. Gravity    $642.5M
8. Thor: The Dark World    $621.0M
9. The Croods    $587.2M
10. World War Z    $540M

Other flicks like Oz: The Great and Powerful, Now You See Me and The great Gatsby came in at 11th, 16th and 18th respectively.

This year also saw last year's best films and brightest stars, rewarded with Academy Awards on February 24. When I saw Django Unchained, I told myself that I wouldn't have it if Christoph Waltz didn't get an Oscar. Thank God he did! Anne Hathaway as well. All that crying she did in Les Miserables couldn't go to waste. Daniel Day Lewis also made history as the only thespian to snag this award three times!

The Emmys also took place on September 22, to reward to people working so hard to keep us laughing day-in-day-out and checking our calendars for when the next episode is airing.

The Un-Classified
This section is for the most famous person of the year. Miley!
It's un-classified 'cause some of us loved it, some of us didn't.
Miley shocked us all, civilians and celebrities included with her performance at the VMAs with Robin Thicke, who has been named 'Sexist of the Year' (not a typo, there is no 'e')
Many weighed in on the performance, some hilariously calling her and Robin, 'Beetlejuice and his daughter'.
At the EMAs in Amsterdam as well, she pulled off a much buzzed about stunt of smoking on stage.
The VMAs performance and Wrecking Ball video

Miley also gave us the most parodied video of the year and one of the most parodied ever. Wrecking Ball also had mass reactions. People even dressed up as 'Miley and Robin Thicke' and this pug and Barbie as 'Miley on the wrecking ball' for Halloween.

Hugh Hefner too...Hilarious

I guess smiley was just trying to show us the person who's always been inside of her.

'Drugs are for idiots and I'm not that person...dancing with Molly, doing whatever we want'
Oh well, let's hope she doesn't spiral downloads.

You've probably seen most of them but here's one of the parodies. It's Nigerian, so if you understand, cheers, I hope you do honestly and find it funny.

P.S- 'Chop igbati' means receive physical disciplinary action.

Before I forget, Miss Utah also did this and we won't forget the epic fail...nor Giuliana Rancic's facial reaction, anytime soon.

Then Justin Bieber announced he was retiring....

THE END.

What were your highlights, people and movies of the year?
Birth of North West, Beyonce's album, American Hustle?

Please share!
