As an aspiring screenwriter/director, it's good to have a list of movies I look up to, fuel my creative juices or simply just boost morale and keep my psyche in check.
I consulted my instincts, revisited my extensive movie playlist and nostalgia did the rest. Below are my top ten best movies of all time. But first, TheTopTens.com's...
10. Pulp Fiction
9. Gladiator
8. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
7. Fight Club
6. The Dark Knight
5. The Lord of The Rings: The Return of The King
4. Shawshank Redemption
3. Titanic
2. Forrest Gump
and...
1.The Godfather
Ok, so you should know that before I compiled my list, I checked out classics. Those flicks whose names come up once in a while when a celebrity is talking about their childhood or in a Vanity Fair article. I saw The Rat Pack, Steel Magnolias, Pulp Fiction, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest and Dr. Zhivago. To be very honest, Pulp Fiction confused me and I was lucky I had seen Django Unchained, else, I would have harbored hatred for Quentin Tarantino in my heart. The only movies that actually impressed me were The Rat Pack- Ray Liotta and Don Cheadle were SOMETHING back in the day. Then, I kinda liked One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, but gosh, that witch, Nurse Ratched should've died. I understand why she was on CNN's villain list. I was sad at the end but oh well.
Anyways, I was surprised to find that two of my best movies appear on TheTopTen's list, but I guess inasmuch as I like the unconventional, there are somethings all avid and well-minded movie lovers agree on. Here are Mine...
10. The Terminal
Tom Hanks' clueless Eastern European character gave me laughs, but mostly, while trying to win Catherine Zeta Jones' air hostess character's heart, he won mine.
9. Shawshank Redemption
The on-screen chemistry between Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman was heartwarming and what a way to escape from prison!
This was when I fell in love with Emma Stone. Those who know me know that soon after, I sewed myself a scarlet letter 'A' on a polka-dotted lace camisole of mine. #justsaying. Good, funny movie.
iTunes, yes? Get it and see it
7. Retired Extremely Dangerous (RED)
John Malkovich did it for me here. He was psychotic alright, but that was ARTISTIC. Helen Mirren...no one does it like her wearing a formal white gown and shooting some magazines. #DAYYUM
6. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
Comical and I was never short of laughs. Genius
5. The Help
You just don't call Jessica Chastain white trash... Or toy with Octavia Spencer. You'll 'eat her s***'. This is an impeccably good almost-biopic.
4. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
After this movie, I thought three things. 1. Robert Downey Jnr. is in a league of his own when it comes to acting. 2. Sherlock Holmes is a character in a league of his own 3.God please let me intern with Mr. Guy Ritchie some day. Incredible, incredible flick.
Already told you guys what this movie did to me. Read it here http://lights-camera-notions.blogspot.com/2013/07/what-argo-did-to-me.html . Either ways, it was a well deserved Best Picture Academy Award win.
You need to see this flick.
2. Forrest Gump
Tom Hanks' slow-witted character was just poignant. From childhood to the bench where he sat narrating his biography thus far, Forrest Gump left me in awe, but mostly in tears.
drumrolls please.....
1. The Prestige
Christopher Nolan + Hugh Jackman + Christian Bale + Michael Caine = PERFECTION. That's all I have to say.
There you have it. My Top Ten Flicks of all time. What are yours?
